Road force balancing cost in Calgary

Road force balancing at Prince Tires is $35 per wheel, or $140 for all four, at our Edmonton Trail NE location. The machine spins each wheel against a loaded roller, measures how much force the tire pushes back with as it turns, and tells us where to rotate the tire on the rim so the assembly runs true under the weight of the car. If you're buying tires from us, standard balancing is already included in the install; the road force upgrade is $15 per tire on top. Standard wheel balancing stays $20 per wheel at both shops.

Starting from $35 per wheel ($140 for all four)

Frequently asked questions

What is road force balancing?
A standard balance spins the wheel in the air and corrects for weight. A road force balance does that too, then presses a heavy roller against the tread while the wheel spins, the way the road does under the weight of your car. That shows up stiff spots in the tire, out-of-round, and a slightly bent wheel, which a normal balancer can't feel. The machine then tells us how to rotate the tire on the rim so the high spot of one lines up with the low spot of the other. The result is a wheel that rolls smooth under load, not just in the air.
How much does road force balancing cost in Calgary?
Road force balancing at Prince Tires Edmonton Trail NE is $35 per wheel, or $140 for all four. If you're having tires installed with us, you can upgrade the standard balance that's already included to a road force balance for $15 per tire. Prices are before GST.
Which Prince Tires location does road force balancing?
Our Edmonton Trail NE shop, at Unit 101, 3928 Edmonton Trail NE. That's where the road force balancer is, so it's the only location you can book this service at. Standard wheel balancing is available at both shops. When you book online and pick road force, the booking page will only show Edmonton Trail times.
When is road force balancing worth it?
When a vibration is still there after a regular balance. When you've just put on premium or low-profile tires and want them to ride the way they should from day one. When you've hit a pothole on 16 Ave or McKnight and the steering wheel hasn't been right since. And on vehicles that are sensitive to the smallest imbalance, which tends to mean sports cars, EVs, and anything on 19-inch rims or bigger.
Will it fix every vibration?
No, and we'll tell you straight if it won't. Road force balancing fixes vibrations that come from the tire and wheel assembly. A shake under braking is usually brake rotors, a vibration that changes with engine speed rather than road speed is driveline, and a worn ball joint or tie rod shows up as play, not imbalance. The road force readout actually helps here: if a tire measures badly out of spec, we can tell you it's the tire, not the balance.
How long does it take?
About 45 minutes for all four wheels. Book a time online and we'll have the bay ready when you arrive at Edmonton Trail.
Can I add road force balancing to a tire installation?
Yes. Every install at Prince Tires includes a standard balance. Book your installation at Edmonton Trail NE and tick the road force upgrade in the add-ons step, and we'll road force balance each tire as it goes on instead, for $15 per tire.

What road force balancing does that a regular balance can't

A tire isn't perfectly uniform. The rubber is a little thicker here, the belts overlap there, and the sidewall is a touch stiffer on one side. At highway speed that unevenness pushes the car up and down hundreds of times a minute, and you feel it as a shimmy in the wheel or a hum through the seat.

A spin balance can't see any of that, because nothing is pressing on the tire while it spins. A road force balancer puts a roller against the tread with roughly the weight of a corner of the car on it, and measures the push-back as the wheel turns.

  • It measures force, not just weight A regular balancer finds the heavy spot. A road force balancer also finds the stiff spot, the place in the sidewall or belt package that pushes back harder than the rest as the tire rolls. Two tires can balance perfectly in the air and ride completely differently on the road.
  • It checks the wheel on its own The machine measures the rim's runout separately, so a wheel that took a pothole and is a millimetre out of round gets caught. That's a wheel problem, not a tire problem, and the fix is different.
  • Match mounting is the actual fix Once it knows the tire's high spot and the wheel's low spot, it tells us how many degrees to rotate the tire on the rim so they cancel each other out. Then it balances the assembly as usual. Weights alone can't do this.
  • You get a number Each wheel comes off the machine with a road force reading in pounds. Most passenger tires are fine under about 15 to 20 lb. If a tire reads well above that after match mounting, the tire itself is the problem, and we'll say so.

Road force balancing is offered at our Edmonton Trail NE shop. Book road force balancing or call (825) 395-4024. For a standard balance at either shop, see wheel balancing.

When to book road force instead of a regular balance

Most vibrations are a plain weight problem and a $20 standard balance fixes them. Road force is for the ones that aren't.

  • You've already had them balanced and it's still there The classic case. The weights are right, the vibration is still there at 100 km/h on Deerfoot. That's a force problem, and this is the tool for it.
  • New tires that didn't ride smooth from the start A fresh set should feel better than the old one. If it doesn't, one tire may have a stiff spot from the factory. Road force readings tell us which one, and whether match mounting fixes it or the tire should go back under warranty.
  • After a hard pothole Spring on McKnight and 16 Ave bends wheels. A small bend is invisible to the eye and to a spin balance, but the runout check catches it.
  • Big rims, low profile, or an EV Less sidewall means less rubber to absorb tire unevenness, and a heavy quiet EV lets you feel everything. These cars benefit most from a road force balance on every tire change.
  • Vibration under braking is NOT this A shudder when you brake is almost always the brake rotors. Road force balancing won't change it, and we'd rather tell you that than take the job.

Not sure which you need? Book a standard balance at either shop and ask us to check the readings. If a wheel is still off, we'll tell you road force is the next step and what it would cost.
