Frequently asked questions

Are all-season tires safe for Calgary winters?
Not really, if we're being honest. All-season tires handle light snow and cold rain, but their rubber compound hardens below 7°C and they're not 3PMSF-rated for the mountain winter-tire mandate (Oct 1 – Apr 30 on Highway 93 and the Trans-Canada). For drivers who mostly stay on plowed major roads and garage-park, they can work paired with cautious winter driving — but for true Calgary cold, ice, or mountain trips, a dedicated winter tire or a 3PMSF all-weather is the safer call.
How long do all-season tires last in Calgary?
Premium touring all-seasons (Michelin Defender 2, Continental TrueContact Tour, Bridgestone Turanza QuietTrack) carry treadwear warranties of 80,000 to 130,000 km — the longest-wearing tires on the market. In real Calgary use, expect 5 to 7 years on a typical sedan or crossover. Rotating every 10,000–12,000 km significantly extends life. Pothole damage from spring freeze-thaw is the biggest cause of early replacement.
What's the difference between all-season and all-weather tires?
All-season tires are NOT 3PMSF-rated and aren't legal as winter tires on Alberta's mountain highways. All-weather tires ARE 3PMSF-rated — same winter certification as dedicated winter tires — and can be run year-round. If you want one set of tires year-round that meets the mountain winter-tire rule, all-weather is the answer. If you're running dedicated winters Nov–Mar, an all-season works for the warm months. See our all-weather guide for the year-round picks.
Do I still need winter tires if I have premium all-seasons?
If you drive in Calgary winters at all — yes. Even the best all-season (Michelin Defender 2, Continental TrueContact Tour) is significantly outperformed by a dedicated winter tire below -10°C. Stopping distances on packed snow can be 30% longer. Most Calgary drivers either run dedicated winter tires Nov–Mar OR switch to 3PMSF all-weather year-round. All-season alone is fine for someone who garage-parks and avoids deep winter driving — not someone who commutes daily in real Calgary cold.
Can you install tires I bought online or elsewhere?
Yes. Bring in any tire — bought from us, online, a dealer, or another retailer — and we'll mount and balance it. Standard installation is $50–$60 per tire and includes mounting, balancing, valve-stem service, torque check, and TPMS reset on standard sizes. We don't charge extra for tires we didn't sell you.

What an "all-season" tire actually is

Despite the name, all-season tires aren't designed for true winter conditions. They're optimized for the temperatures between 7°C and the heat of summer — quiet, comfortable, long-wearing, and predictable in dry and wet. Below 7°C, the rubber compound hardens and grip drops sharply.

For most Canadian markets that covers 7–8 months of the year. The other 4–5 months — Calgary's actual winter — are when an all-season tire is a compromise.

  • Long tread life Premium touring all-seasons run 80,000–130,000 km warranties — the longest-wearing category on the market.
  • Quiet on highway pavement No aggressive winter tread to drone on Stoney Trail or Deerfoot at speed.
  • Real wet-weather grip Important for Calgary spring slush, pothole season runoff, and summer thunderstorm driving.
  • Not 3PMSF-rated All-season tires do NOT meet the mountain winter-tire mandate on Highway 93 to Banff or the Trans-Canada Oct 1 – Apr 30.

If you spend the winter mostly on plowed major roads, garage-park your vehicle, and don't see mountain trips in deep winter, an all-season can work — paired with cautious driving in the worst conditions. If you want a single set that's legal for the mountain winter-tire mandate, look at the all-weather category instead.

When all-season tires are the right call (and when they aren't)

All-season tires work if you:

  • Commute mostly on plowed major roads (Deerfoot, Glenmore, Stoney, Macleod)
  • Garage-park your vehicle and rarely face -25°C mornings on packed ice
  • Drive cautiously in deep winter and avoid mountain trips Oct–Apr
  • Want maximum tread life on a daily-driver sedan or crossover
  • Already plan to swap to dedicated winters for the cold months

Upgrade to all-weather or winter if you:

  • Want one set all year that's legal for the mountain winter-tire mandate (go all-weather)
  • Park outside and routinely deal with -20°C or colder packed ice (go winter)
  • Drive into Banff, Lake Louise, or BC mountains in winter (go winter or all-weather)
  • Drive a truck, SUV, or heavy vehicle that needs real winter grip

For most Calgary drivers, the honest answer is that all-season tires alone aren't enough for winter. Two cleaner setups: pair a quality all-season with a set of dedicated winter tires for Nov–Mar, or skip the swap entirely with a 3PMSF all-weather tire that handles year-round. We'll help you choose based on how you actually drive.

Installation, warranties, and what's included

When you buy a set of all-season tires at Prince Tires:

  • Road-hazard coverage available on select brands. Ask at quote time — Michelin, Bridgestone, and a few others offer it on premium lines.
  • Free re-torque check at 50–100 km. Calgary's freeze/thaw swings can loosen lug nuts. Drop by within a week and we'll re-tighten at no charge.
  • TPMS service included with install. We'll reset, replace stems, or swap sensors as needed.
  • Price Match Guarantee. Match any written quote from another Calgary tire shop on the same model and size.
