When should I switch to winter tires in Calgary?
The general rule is when daily temperatures stay consistently below 7°C — usually mid-to-late October in Calgary. Don't wait for the first snowfall: by then every tire shop in the city is booked out two weeks. Plan to install your winter tires by mid-October, and switch back in mid-to-late April when overnight lows stay above 7°C.
Are winter tires legally required in Alberta?
Not within Calgary city limits or on Alberta highways. But they ARE required on Highway 93 (the Banff highway) and the Trans-Canada through the mountains during the Oct 1 – Apr 30 winter-tire period. Any tire marked with the 3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake) symbol meets the requirement.
How long do winter tires last in Calgary?
Most premium winter tires (Michelin X-Ice Snow, Bridgestone Blizzak WS90) last 4 to 6 winter seasons when used only in winter (Nov–Mar) and stored properly the rest of the year. That's roughly 40,000–60,000 km of winter-only use. Running winters year-round destroys them in 18 months — the soft compound wears fast on warm asphalt.
Should I get studded winter tires in Calgary?
Studded tires are legal in Alberta year-round (unlike BC, where there are seasonal restrictions). They give noticeable grip on glare ice, which makes them worth it if you drive icy gravel roads or routinely encounter packed ice on side streets in the NE or SE. The trade-off: studs are louder on bare pavement and slightly less effective on dry/wet roads. Most Calgary city drivers don't need them — a quality non-studded winter tire like the Blizzak WS90 or X-Ice Snow is enough.
Can I just put winter tires on the front wheels of my front-wheel-drive car?
No. Always install winter tires on all four wheels, even on a FWD car. Mismatched tires create a dangerous handling imbalance — your front end will grip but your rear end will slide out on turns. Every tire manufacturer and Transport Canada is unanimous on this. We won't install two winter tires on a vehicle for this reason.

When you need winter tires (and when all-weather will do)

You need dedicated winter tires if you:

  • Commute through rural Alberta back roads or mountain highways daily in winter

All-weather tires might be enough if you:
