Book nowWhat winter tires actually do in Calgary
The difference between a winter tire and an all-season is not marketing — it's chemistry. Below 7°C, standard all-season rubber stiffens and loses its ability to deform around road texture. That means less contact patch, less grip, longer stopping distances. By -20°C an all-season is functionally a plastic puck.
A winter tire keeps its softness in deep cold thanks to a high-silica compound. The tread is also cut differently — narrow sipes that act like thousands of tiny biting edges on snow and ice, and channels that evacuate slush before you hydroplane on the slushy side streets across Calgary.
- Up to 30% shorter stopping distances On packed snow versus all-season tires — the difference that matters when something jumps out at you on a side street.
- Real traction on -25°C mornings The icy pull-out from your alley before the sun hits, when an all-season tire is functionally a plastic puck.
- Legal on the mountain highways Highway 93 to Banff and the Trans-Canada through the mountains both require 3PMSF tires from Oct 1 – Apr 30.
- Grip on Calgary black ice The long stretches that form on McKnight, Glenmore, and 16th Ave after a thaw-freeze cycle.
The winter tires we stock in Calgary
We carry the brands and models that actually work in Calgary's conditions. The most-asked-for at our shop:
Michelin X-Ice Snow
The premium all-rounder. Long tread life, quiet, excellent on ice and packed snow. Our most-installed premium winter tire.
Bridgestone Blizzak WS90
The gold standard for ice traction in Calgary cold snaps. If you regularly start your day on -25°C packed ice, this is the tire.
Toyo Observe GSi-6
Best value in the premium winter category. Strong all-around winter performance at a price below Michelin and Bridgestone.
Yokohama iceGUARD
Strong on ice and slush, popular with SUV and crossover drivers who want a refined winter ride at a friendlier price.
Continental VikingContact 7
Engineered for Nordic winters. Quiet, premium-tier wet/slush performance — a strong alternative to X-Ice Snow.
Cooper Discoverer True North
Strong mid-tier option. Often the answer for budget-conscious daily drivers who still want a real dedicated winter tire.
BFGoodrich Winter T/A KSI
Durable winter tire from a well-known brand at a friendly price point. Reliable, no-fuss option for sedans and crossovers.
General AltiMAX Arctic 12
Value pick (owned by Continental), studdable, surprisingly capable for the price. Popular with rural-route commuters.

When you need winter tires (and when all-weather will do)
You need dedicated winter tires if you:
- Park outside and routinely start your day on -20°C or colder packed ice
- Commute through rural Alberta back roads or mountain highways daily in winter
- Drive into the mountains in winter (Banff, Lake Louise, Canmore, Kananaskis)
- Tow regularly in winter (heavier loads need every bit of grip)
- Drive a truck or heavy SUV that demands real winter rubber for ice control
All-weather tires might be enough if you:
- Commute mostly on plowed major roads (Deerfoot, Glenmore, Stoney, Macleod)
- Park in a garage and rarely deal with the worst of -30°C mornings
- Want to skip the spring/fall changeover and storage hassle
- Drive a sedan or crossover that doesn't see mountain or rural winter conditions
For most Calgary drivers who actually deal with deep cold, ice, and side-street snow, dedicated winter tires are the right call. If you mostly stay in the city and want one set of tires year-round, an all-weather tire can do the job. The few hundred dollars in extra equipment costs less than one fender-bender deductible.
Installation, warranties, and what's included
When you buy a set of winter tires at Prince Tires:
- Same-day install where we have your size in stock. Most common Calgary sizes are stocked through changeover season.
- Manufacturer treadwear warranty passed through. Michelin and Bridgestone both run 60,000+ km warranties on their winter lines.
- Road-hazard coverage available on select brands. Ask at quote time — Michelin, Bridgestone, and a few others offer it on premium lines.
- Free re-torque check at 50–100 km. Calgary's freeze/thaw swings can loosen lug nuts. Drop by within a week and we'll re-tighten them at no charge.
- TPMS service included with install. We'll reset, replace stems, or swap sensors as needed — including TPMS on a separate winter wheel set if you run one.
- Price Match Guarantee. Match any written quote from another Calgary tire shop on the same model and size.
Not ready to install today? We'll hold your tires for up to two weeks while you sort out scheduling. Call (403) 452-4283 to reserve a set, or book online when you're ready. During the October–November changeover rush, booking ahead is the difference between same-day and waiting a week.
