Shop studded winter tiresWhat studded tires actually do on Calgary ice
A studless winter tire grips ice through chemistry — a soft, high-silica compound and thousands of tiny sipes that bite the surface. That's enough for most plowed city driving. But on glare ice and hard-packed snow, there's a hard ceiling to how much a rubber compound alone can hold.
Studs break through that ceiling. Each tire carries dozens of small metal pins that physically dig into the ice as the tread rotates, giving you grip a studless tire simply can't generate on a polished, frozen surface. The trade-off is noise and slightly reduced grip on bare pavement — which is why studs are a deliberate choice for ice-heavy driving, not a default for everyone.
- Metal studs bite into glare ice Where a studless compound can only grip, a stud physically digs into hard ice — the edge that matters pulling out onto a polished side street.
- Best traction on icy rural and acreage roads If your commute runs icy gravel or unplowed back roads around Calgary, studs do what no studless tire can match.
- Shorter stops on packed, polished snow On the hard-packed ice that forms on hills and shaded streets after a thaw-freeze cycle, studs cut your stopping distance.
- Legal in Alberta all winter No seasonal restriction here, so you can run studs from the first freeze right through the last spring cold snap.
Studdable winter tires we stock in Calgary
Almost every ice tire we carry is studdable — you choose whether to add studs at install. The models Calgary drivers ask for most:

Our most-stocked studdable ice tire. Strong value, available in car, crossover and SUV sizes, molded for studs. The go-to for Calgary drivers who want serious ice grip without premium pricing.
Toyo Observe G3-Ice

Kumho WinterCraft ICE Wi31 / WS31
Strong mid-to-premium studdable line covering car (Wi31) and SUV/truck (WS31) sizes. Reliable ice grip at a friendly price.
Firestone Winterforce 2
Budget-friendly studdable workhorse. A long-time favourite of rural-route and acreage commuters who run studs every winter. Car, UV and LT sizes.
General AltiMAX Arctic 12
Value pick owned by Continental, studdable, and surprisingly capable for the price. A common choice for second vehicles and rural commuters.
Cooper Evolution Winter / Snow Claw
Studdable options from sedan sizes (Evolution Winter) up to aggressive truck fitments (Discoverer Snow Claw). Durable, no-fuss winter rubber.
Radar Dimax Ice Lock

Arctic Devastator (LT)
Studdable light-truck winter tire for lifted trucks and heavy 10-ply fitments. Built for serious ice traction on big rigs and work trucks.

When studs make sense (and when studless is the smarter call)
Studded tires are worth it if you:
- Drive icy gravel, rural, or acreage roads around Calgary every winter
- Commute on side streets that rarely get plowed (much of the NE and SE)
- Routinely face glare ice on hills after a thaw-freeze cycle
- Drive a truck or heavy SUV that needs maximum ice bite for work or towing
- Want the most ice traction money can buy and don't mind extra road noise
A studless winter tire is likely enough if you:
- Commute mostly on plowed major roads (Deerfoot, Glenmore, Stoney, Macleod)
- Park in a garage and rarely deal with glare-ice starts
- Are sensitive to tire noise on bare pavement
- Drive a city sedan or crossover — a studless tire like the Blizzak WS90 is plenty
Studs are a specialist's tool: unbeatable on glare ice and icy back roads, but louder and slightly worse on bare pavement. If your winters are spent on plowed city streets, a premium studless winter tire will serve you better. Tell us how you actually drive and we'll point you to the right call — no upsell.
Studding, install, and what's included
When you buy a set of studdable winter tires at Prince Tires:
- Studs installed at time of mounting. Choose studs on any studdable tire we sell — we press them in before install, done in one visit.
- Same-day install where we have your size in stock. Most common Calgary sizes are stocked through changeover season.
- Manufacturer treadwear warranty passed through. The studdable lines we carry come with the manufacturer's standard winter warranty.
- Free re-torque check at 50–100 km. Calgary's freeze/thaw swings can loosen lug nuts. Drop by within a week and we'll re-tighten them at no charge.
- TPMS service included with install. We'll reset, replace stems, or swap sensors as needed — including TPMS on a separate winter wheel set if you run one.
- Price Match Guarantee. Match any written quote from another Calgary tire shop on the same model and size.
Want studs added to a set? Tell us at quote time and we'll have them pressed in and ready. Call (403) 452-4283 to confirm your size and pricing, or browse studdable winter tires online. During the October–November changeover rush, booking ahead is the difference between same-day and waiting a week.
