Speed Ratings Matter: High performance tires carry speed ratings from V (240 km/h) through Y (300 km/h) and ZR (unlimited). Always match or exceed your vehicle's OEM speed rating — fitting a lower-rated tire on a performance car is a safety and insurance risk.

UHP Summer

Ultra High Performance Summer Tires

The pinnacle of road-legal performance rubber. UHP summer tires use ultra-soft silica compounds and asymmetric tread patterns tuned for maximum dry and wet grip — engineered hand-in-hand with BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, and Mercedes-AMG. These are summer-only tires: below 7°C, pull them off and swap to winters. The Calgary season is May through September.

Season: May to September in Calgary
Speed Rating: W (270 km/h) to Y (300 km/h)
Best For: Sports cars, performance sedans
Note: Not for use below 7°C

Track & Sport Performance Tires

DOT-legal semi-slick and max-performance tires designed for track days, autocross, and spirited canyon driving. These tires run a much softer compound with minimal sipe depth for maximum contact patch — expect exceptional grip but shorter street tread life. Not suitable for wet or cold conditions. For track use and summer street driving by serious enthusiasts only.

Use: Track days, autocross, sport driving
Compound: Ultra-soft semi-slick
Note: Reduced wet performance
Legal: DOT-approved for street use

Performance All-Season

Performance All-Season Tires

Performance all-season tires combine sport handling DNA with the ability to handle light snow and cold temperatures. Unlike pure summer performance tires, these are 3PMSF certified and legal year-round in Alberta — the ideal choice for a performance sedan or sports car that gets driven in spring and fall shoulder seasons in Calgary. Not a replacement for dedicated winter tires in deep winter.

Season: Year-round — light snow capable
Speed Rating: V to Y (240-300 km/h)
Best For: Performance cars, shoulder seasons
Certification: 3PMSF rated

Why It Matters

What Makes a Performance Tire Different

Standard tires prioritize comfort and longevity. Performance tires sacrifice tread life to deliver the grip, response, and control that sports cars demand. Here is what separates them.

Compound Softness
Performance compounds run significantly softer than touring tires — they deform slightly under load to increase contact patch size and grip. The trade-off is faster wear. A typical UHP summer tire lasts 25,000-35,000 km versus 60,000-80,000 km for a touring tire. That wear buys you real grip.
Stiff Sidewalls
UHP tires use stiffer, reinforced sidewalls that minimize flex under cornering loads. Less sidewall flex means the tread stays flat on the road through corners — maximizing the contact patch at the moment you need it most. This is why performance cars feel sharper to steer on sport tires than touring tires.
Wet Weather Design
Top UHP summer tires — like the Pirelli PZ5 and Continental SportContact 7 — score nearly as well in wet testing as they do in dry. Wide circumferential grooves, aggressive sipes, and silica-enriched compounds evacuate water and maintain grip in rain. Never confuse summer-only with fair-weather-only.
FAQ

Performance Tire Questions

No. UHP summer and track tires are designed for temperatures above 7°C. Below that, the soft compound hardens rapidly — braking distances increase dramatically and the tire can crack on cold pavement. In Calgary, summer performance tires should go on in May and come off in October. You need a dedicated set of winter tires for October through April.
Ultra High Performance (UHP) tires — like the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and Pirelli P Zero — are street-focused with excellent dry and wet performance and reasonable tread life (25,000-40,000 km). Max Performance tires — like the Pilot Sport Cup 2 R and Toyo R888R — run much softer semi-slick compounds for extreme grip but wear out faster and have reduced wet grip. Max Performance are for enthusiasts who do track days; UHP are for everyday spirited driving.
Many performance vehicles — especially BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren — are factory-fitted with tires carrying OEM approval marks (N-rated for Porsche, MO for Mercedes, * for BMW). These tires have been tuned to the vehicle's specific suspension geometry. While you can fit non-OEM-spec tires, you may notice a change in ride character, noise, and handling balance. Ask our team whether your car requires OEM-spec rubber or can use the broader market.
Not really. While performance all-season tires (like the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4) are 3PMSF certified and carry a winter symbol, they are engineered for mild winter conditions — light snow and temperatures just below 0°C. Calgary winters regularly hit -20°C to -30°C, where even 3PMSF all-season tires lose significant grip versus a dedicated winter tire. For Calgary, the best setup is performance summer tires for May-September and proper winter tires for October-April.
UHP summer tires typically run $250-$500 per tire installed depending on size — roughly 2-3x the cost of a standard touring tire. Track-focused semi-slick tires run $300-$600. The higher cost reflects the advanced compound engineering and OEM development programs. However, because performance cars are often driven less aggressively on the street, many drivers get 3-5 seasons from a quality UHP set. Ask us for a quote based on your specific vehicle and size.
