Bias Ply

Small Trailer Tires

Economy bias ply trailer tires for light-duty applications - jet ski trailers, small utility trailers, boat trailers, and pop-up campers. Bias ply construction uses diagonal nylon or polyester cords that create stiffer, more puncture-resistant sidewalls. The ideal choice for infrequent towing, rough terrain access roads, or trailers that do not travel at high speeds on Alberta highways.

Construction: Bias ply (diagonal cord)
Best For: Light trailers, slow speeds
Load Range: C-D (6-8 ply)
Speed: Up to 75 mph (120 km/h)

Semi-Steel

Semi-Steel Trailer Tires

Semi-steel (bias belted) trailer tires combine the stiffer sidewall of bias ply construction with steel belt reinforcement for added stability. A strong mid-range option for regular towing on Alberta highways - better highway tracking and handling than basic bias ply, at a price point below full all-steel radials. Popular for boat trailers, cargo trailers, and toy haulers that travel regularly on paved roads.

Construction: Bias + steel belt
Best For: Regular highway towing
Load Range: D-E (8-10 ply)
Speed: Up to 75 mph (120 km/h)

All-Steel Radial

All-Steel Radial Tires

Premium all-steel radial trailer tires are the top choice for RV trailers, fifth wheels, and heavy cargo haulers that regularly travel Alberta and Trans-Canada highways. Multiple overlapping steel belts provide superior cornering stability, less trailer sway, smoother ride, and better fuel economy versus bias ply. Run cooler at highway speeds - reducing blowout risk on long Calgary to Banff or Edmonton hauls. Available in heavy-duty Load Range G and H for maximum payloads.

Construction: All-steel radial belts
Best For: RVs, heavy trailers, long haul
Load Range: E-H (10-16 ply)
Speed: Up to 75 mph (120 km/h)

Understanding ST Trailer Tires

ST (Special Trailer) tires are purpose-built for trailers - not trucks, not cars. Using the wrong tire type on a trailer is one of the most common causes of blowouts and trailer sway accidents on Alberta highways. Here is what you need to know.

Why ST Tires Only?

ST tires carry 10% more load than LT tires and 40% more than passenger tires at the same size. Their reinforced, stiffer sidewalls actively resist trailer sway - which passenger and LT tires cannot do. Never use P or LT tires on a trailer axle.

+10% vs LT +40% vs Passenger Sway Resistance
3 Constructions Explained

Bias Ply: Diagonal nylon cords. Stiffer, puncture-resistant, lower cost. Best for rough terrain and short hauls.

Semi-Steel: Bias with steel belts added. Better highway tracking. Mid-range option.

All-Steel Radial: Full steel belts. Smoothest ride, best highway stability, runs coolest. Recommended for RVs and long haul Alberta driving.

Speed & Inflation Rules

All ST tires are rated for a maximum 75 mph (120 km/h) - do not exceed this on Alberta highways. Always inflate to the maximum sidewall pressure listed. ST tires require higher pressure than LT tires to achieve their rated load capacity. Under-inflation is the #1 cause of trailer tire blowouts.

Trailer Tire FAQ

Calgary Trailer Tire Questions

What does ST mean on a trailer tire?
ST stands for Special Trailer - a tire rating specifically for trailer axles, not drive or steer axles. ST tires have reinforced sidewalls that carry more load and resist trailer sway. Always use ST-rated tires on trailers.
What is the difference between bias ply and all-steel radial trailer tires?
Bias ply tires are stiffer and lower cost, making them ideal for infrequent use and rough terrain. All-steel radial tires provide smoother ride, better stability, and cooler highway operation for RV trailers and frequent towing.
What load range do I need for my trailer?
Divide trailer GVWR by number of tires and ensure each tire load capacity exceeds that number at max inflation. When in doubt, choose one load range higher for extra safety margin.
What size trailer tires do I need?
Use the tire size listed on the trailer certification label, usually near the hitch. Bring your trailer in or call with your sidewall size and we will match it quickly.
How often should I replace trailer tires?
Replace trailer tires every 3-5 years regardless of tread depth due to age cracking from UV and ozone exposure. Inspect sidewalls and DOT date code before each towing season.
