1. Slow down. This gets ignored most and matters most. A gravel stone at 80 km/h carries roughly four times the kinetic energy it does at 40 km/h. Dropping to 40–50 km/h on loose gravel is not being timid — it is physics. Your tires notice the difference.
2. Run correct tire pressure. Low pressure makes sidewalls flex more, which increases vulnerability to impact bruising. Use the pressure on your vehicle's door placard — the sticker on the driver's door jamb — not the maximum figure stamped on the tire sidewall.
3. Increase your following distance. The most common cause of stone chips is the vehicle ahead throwing rocks backward. Drop back at least 100 metres on loose gravel — more if there is a truck or RV ahead of you.
