How to choose the right tire for Calgary
Calgary's mix of -30°C January, +30°C August, mountain trips, gravel back roads, and pothole-heavy spring makes tire choice harder here than most cities. The good news: there's no single "best" tire — there's a right tire for how YOU drive. Four questions usually narrow it to one or two options.
- What's the vehicle? Sedan or crossover → passenger touring. Truck or heavy SUV → A/T or H/T light truck. Trailer → ST. Sports car or tuned EV → UHP performance.
- Year-round or seasonal? One set all year + winter-legal → all-weather. Two sets → pair winter with all-season or summer. Year-round in a sport car → UHP all-season.
- What's the worst-case use? Pick for your hardest condition, not your typical day. Tow heavy once a year → load-range for that load. Drive Banff in January → 3PMSF or dedicated winter.
- Budget vs longevity Premium touring all-seasons go 80,000–130,000 km. Premium winters last 4–6 seasons. UHP summer 30k–50k km. Spending more usually means more tread life, not just better grip.
