Hydroplaning on Calgary Highways: How to Avoid It and What to Do

Hydroplaning kills more drivers in summer than ice does in winter. It happens fast, it happens silently, and it usually catches the driver completely off guard. Most Calgary drivers think of it as a Vancouver problem because we get less rain than the coast — but our highways, our speeds, and our worn tires combine to make Deerfoot and the Trans-Canada exactly the conditions where hydroplaning lives. What Hydroplaning Actually Is

Hydroplaning happens when a tire encounters more water on the road than it can clear from under itself. Instead of the tread biting into the pavement, the tire rides on top of a thin layer of water. Grip drops to near zero. Steering, braking, and acceleration inputs do nothing because there's no rubber in contact with the road.

Three things have to be true at the same time for hydroplaning to happen: standing water on the road, enough vehicle speed to outrun the tire's ability to displace that water, and tread that isn't deep enough to channel the water out from under the contact patch. Take any one of those away and the risk drops substantially.

Transport Canada notes that hydroplaning typically begins at speeds above 80 km/h when there's just 3 mm of standing water — less than the depth of a 5-cent piece. That's why it's a highway risk, not a city-street one.

Why It's a Bigger Risk on Calgary Highways Than You Think

We don't get Vancouver rain. But four specific Calgary conditions create perfect hydroplaning setups.

Sudden summer thunderstorms. A dry highway becomes a wet one in five minutes during prairie storms. Standing water collects in road grooves before drainage catches up. Drivers don't reduce speed because they were dry a minute ago.

Chinook melt water in spring. A January warm-up melts the snowpack overnight. By morning, sections of Deerfoot, Glenmore, and 16th Ave have running water across the lanes that refreezes by evening — but the morning commute has full-speed wet driving.

Worn or aged tires. Tread depth is everything for hydroplaning resistance. Below 4/32" (3 mm) of tread, the channels can't clear water fast enough at highway speed. Use the toonie test to know where your tread sits.

The Three Factors You Can Control

1. Tread depth. The single biggest driver-controllable factor. New tires have 10 to 11/32" of tread. At 4/32", hydroplaning risk roughly doubles at highway speed. At 2/32" (the legal minimum), it's about four times higher. 2. Tire pressure. Underinflated tires have a softer, wider contact patch that floats on water more easily. Proper cold-pressure inflation keeps the tread pattern engaged. Calgary's freeze-thaw makes pressure drift constant; check monthly.

3. Speed. The single fastest fix in the moment. Below 70 km/h on visibly wet pavement, hydroplaning is rare for tires in decent condition. Above 90 km/h on the same pavement, the risk climbs fast. Tire pattern matters too. Asymmetric and directional treads clear water better than symmetric all-seasons. What to Do If You Start Hydroplaning

The instinct most drivers have is wrong: stamping the brake. Don't.

  1. Ease off the gas completely. Don't slam off — gentle release. You want the vehicle to slow without weight transfer that could break grip when it returns.
  2. Don't brake. Braking on a hydroplaning tire either does nothing or transfers weight unevenly and starts a spin.
  3. Keep the steering wheel pointed straight. If you turn during a hydroplane, the tires will grip suddenly when they re-engage the pavement, and you'll dart in the direction you steered.
  4. Wait for the grip to return. It happens within a second or two as speed drops. You'll feel it: the steering wheel goes from light to weighted, and you feel the road again.
  5. Once you have grip, gently steer to your lane and slow down further.

Calgary Hydroplaning FAQs

Do AWD or 4WD vehicles hydroplane less?
No. Hydroplaning is a tire-to-water issue, not a drive-wheel issue. AWD helps you go in wet conditions; it does nothing for stopping or steering once the tire is on top of water.

How deep does the water need to be?
As little as 3 mm of standing water can cause hydroplaning at highway speeds. You don't need a puddle — a wet sheen across the lane is enough.

Does tire brand matter for hydroplaning resistance?
Yes, somewhat. Wet performance is one of the ratings on a tire's UTQG label and on most manufacturer data sheets. Premium brands generally have better wet-grip ratings, but tread depth and pressure matter more than brand at the threshold.

Can winter tires hydroplane in summer?
Yes — and worse. Winter rubber is softer and the tread is optimized for snow, not water clearance. Don't run winter tires past spring.

What's the safest highway speed in summer rain?
Back off 15 to 20 km/h from the posted limit until the pavement is sheeting clear, especially in the first 30 minutes of rain when oil residue is still on the surface.
